With just a few days before Christmas, I thought a post about the season, reflecting on it’s true meaning and our hopes for 2018 would be a great way to end the year.
Christmas has meant a lot of things over the years. Previously it was about presents, family, celebrating the birth of Christ… but as I’ve got older, as my family has expanded, I’ve come to view Christmas as a time to also really find new revelation in the Christmas Story. What is it that God wants me to learn in the coming year? What have I learnt this year? I used to be a real forward thinker, planning everything, getting prepared for the next season, the New Year. Now days, I feel the desire to really pause and contemplate God’s love and his forgiveness during this holiday season. It’s become more about what I can give, than what I receive.
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly, sweetly through the night
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their brief delightGloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis DeoShepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis DeoCome to Bethlehem and seeHim whose birth the angels sing,Come, adore on bended knee,Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
Sometimes we need to take a closer look at the narrative of Carols and remember that they have lasted as long as they have because the spiritual depth they have defies age and time. Yes we may play them in a way that is more contemporary, upbeat or current, but the heart of them remains true. I believe that it’s our responsibility to make Church accessible, to make Jesus accessible. But however we decide to tell the story, or sing the song, the Truth of it never changes.
In 2018, I want to be a better husband and father. I want to really build in relationships with Lizzie and Lilja. Career wise, I want to continue leading worship as a volunteer, and to take people on a new journey with that. In terms of music I want to be writing more and creating new songs. I want to collaborate with more people – doing more artistic projects. I’m hoping to tour in Europe with festivals in the Summer. I am looking to God to do the extraordinary as well. I don’t have any official locked plans and I want to make space for God to do some stuff and to give me ideas.
I pray that this Christmas season you experience growth in your relationship with God, that for those of you who haven’t yet, you meet God deeply and personally. I pray that you are able to reflect on the lessons of 2017 and the excitement of 2018.
Merry Christmas to you all
Pete.

Here’s a playlist of some of my favourite Christmas songs. Enjoy!
